First-year JHI Physics student Jasmin Evans has won a prestigious award from the Stemette organisation, which promotes STEM activities to women and girls. The prize include an all-expenses-paid trip to Phoenix, Arizona to attend an international conference.
Jasmin says:
‘As someone passionate about STEM and outreach, I applied to be part of the summer 2014 Student to Stemette mentoring scheme managed by the Stemette organisation, in conjunction with Deutsche Bank. Stemettes exist to get more women and young girls interested in STEM activities. This is achieved by running hacks, panel events and this wonderful mentoring scheme.
The launch event for this was held at Deutsche Bank headquarters in London where we had a ‘mentor matching’ session. Here we spoke to lots of women who work at the bank and also have STEM backgrounds, it was an incredible experience and truly inspiring. After this we were matched with a mentor who I now communicate with regularly via webinars and online mentor meetings.
As part of the scheme, there was the chance to win a trip to the Grace Hopper Celebration, a conference for women in technology held in Phoenix, Arizona, by writing about what its like to be a mentored. I was delighted to hear that all my work on this over the summer had paid off, and out of many entries my submission was chosen to be one of only five people to attend this event. I believe this will be a great opportunity to meet other women working in STEM subjects, explore new technologies being developed and even possibly steer my own future career options.’
