Undergraduate Research Success For Simon

Congratulations to JHI second-year astrophysics student, Simon Ebo, who has been selected to present his research at a National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) at the University of North Carolina, USA, 7-9 April 2016. The award announcement from the NCUR committee reads:

“Dear Simon Ebo,

Congratulations! We are pleased to write that your abstract submission, “The Discovery of EPIC 201585823, a Rare Triple-Mode RR Lyrae Star, the First in K2,” was selected for presentation at NCUR 30 at the University of North Carolina Asheville. Chosen from more than 4,000 submissions, your abstract demonstrates a unique contribution to your field of study, and we are glad to offer you the opportunity to present your work to your peers, faculty, and staff from all over the nation. ”

Simon’s research was conducted while he was a UCLan summer intern. His work on data from the NASA Kepler K2 mission led to the discovery of a very rare and important type of pulsating star, called a triple-mode RR Lyrae star, and to his co-authorship of a refereed publication in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

Simon will present a poster on his work at the North Carolina conference and will have the opportunity to meet many other international scientists.
