Jeremiah Horrock Institute - University of Central Lancashire
Undergraduate Research School - 14th to 18th December 2009
The Jeremiah
Horrocks Institute is pleased to announce the third annual
Undergraduate Research School from the 14th
to the 18th December 2009. We are funding up to 20 delegates (third and fourth year
undergraduates in astronomy, astrophysics, physics,
mathematics or computer science) to spend a week with the
researchers of the Institute engaging in a range of research
activities applying modern techniques, including
high-performance computing and 3D visualisation, to
contemporary problems in science.
Funding for participants includes meals and accommodation but not travel expenses. Applications are competitive and rely on transcripts of results so far, CV and a statement from the applicant. Funded delegates are expected to be present for the entire period of the School.
The School will be run by staff in the Institute and staff carrying out related research at UCLan. This year we are pleased to have
- Professor Michael F. Bode - Director of Astrophysics Research Institute at Liverpool John Moores University and Task Leader for the ASTRONET Roadmap, who will present a talk titled "Europe's Plans for Astronomy over the Next Twenty Years".
- Dr Martin Bateman
- Dr Danielle Bewsher
- Dr Barbara Bromage
- Dr Tim Cawthorne
- Dr Nadia Chuzhanova
- Dr Roger Clowes
- Dr Silvia Dalla
- Dr Victor Debattista
- Dr Stewart Eyres
- Prof. Don Kurtz
- Dr Cristina Popescu
- Dr Anne Sansom
- Dr Robert Walsh
A full programme for the school is available.
Also involved will be the research students and post-doctoral staff
of the Institute, providing additional perspectives on UCLan, Preston and
working in science. Delegates will engage in a range of
research activities, including seminars, discussions
and practical exercises, designed to give them a taste for the breadth
and depth of research carried out within the Institute. Over the course
of 5 days there will also be ample opportunities to discuss both
research and career options with the staff and students of the
Institute.
Applications
Applications are to be submitted on the application form to the email address indicated. The deadline for applications is the 30th November 2009, and we anticipate informing all applicants of our decision early December.
Sponsors
