Solar Physics - Research
Solar and Solar-Terrestial Physics are in an unprecedented era largely
due to high resolution space and ground based observations coupled
with great strides in sophisticated computer simulations (you can find links to the main space and ground based solar observatories here).
Researchers in the Solar Physics Group are investigating (observationally and theoretically) the solar atmosphere and the effects of Space Weather on the Earth.
Our work includes:
- space based satellite observations from SoHO, TRACE, Hinode and STEREO
- spectroscopy of the solar atmosphere
- ground-based observations of the ionsphere using EISCAT radars
- sophisticated MHD simulations of the Sun's magnetically dominated corona
- studies of solar flares and Coronal Mass Ejections and the acceleration of energetic particles
If you are interested in pursuing a PhD in our group, you are welcome to contact Dr Silvia Dalla for an informal discussion of possible PhD projects (Contact details). Information on how to apply for a PhD can be found here.
