Personal profile

I am Dean of the Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Science, at the University of South Wales. I provide strategic leadership on our portfolio, also leading on equality, diversity and inclusion as well as staff development. I deputise for the Executive Dean, and line manage the Heads of School and the Head of Learning, Teaching and Student Experience. During my time at the University of Central Lancashire I was most recently Head of Physical Sciences and Computing, and over my time there I also acted as Head of the Centre for Astrophysics (3 months), Associate Head of Physics (6 months), Head of School (5 months), and previously was the Associate Head, then Associate Dean, of the School of Computing, Engineering and Physical Sciences (2009 to 2015). I am currently Chair of the STFC Steering Committee for the e-MERLIN/VLBI National Facility, and have previously chaired the PATT Time Allocation Committee for the Liverpool Telescope. I joined the UK Square Kilometre Array Science Committee in January 2017. I retain a Visiting Fellow role at the University of Central Lancashire within the Jeremiah Horrocks Institute, and since October 2017 I have been External Examiner for the Astronomy programmes at University College London. During 2017 as Chair of the STFC Steering Committee I made key contributions in evidence to the Radio Astronomy Review Panel and supported STFC and the Facility staff in agreeing renewed and enhanced funding from 2018 onwards. In the Faculty we have seen an 8 point improvement in the mean Overall Satisfaction resopnse to NSS (2019 vs 2017 survey), with the Schools seeing improvements in almost all categories. From 2017 to 2019 we ran the Learning Experience Enhancement Project with a series of Development Workshops for experienced staff and a programme of Teaching Excellence Seminars and Symposia available to all. The Seminars will continue in 2019/20 expanding to provide more opportunities for staff to develop their teaching, while LEEP has developed into bespoke development activities for selected subject areas.
