Teaching
Members of the JHI are responsible for teaching at an undergraduate level along with the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan). The JHI and UCLan provide undergraduate course MPhys (Hons) and BSc (Hons) degrees in Physics, Astronomy and Mathematics.
All of these courses listed below are available to apply to via UCAS.
Physics
Available undergraduate courses:
- MPhys (Hons) Physics
- BSc (Hons) Physics
- MPhys (Hons) Applied Physics
- BSc (Hons) Applied Physics
- BSc (Hons) Physics (foundation year entry)
The MPhys (Hons) and BSc (Hons) Physics degree courses provide a rounded education in the subject, from quantum physics to the formation of the universe. Upon completion of this Physics degree you will have strong analytical and mathematical skills, backed up by practical laboratory experience and an in-depth knowledge of the laws of physics, and how they apply to real situations.
The Foundation year entry course is designed as an entry route onto UCLan’s Physics and Astrophysics BSc/MPhys (Hons) degree suite for students who do not possess the normal entry requirements. These are students who may not have the right set of A Level grades, have taken other qualifications, or are returning to education after a period of time in employment.
Astronomy
Available undergraduate courses:
The MPhys (Hons) and BSc (Hons) Astrophysics degree courses provides essential training in understanding the underlying physical concepts of the stars and galaxies which make up the universe, while developing skills in scientific methods.
As an Astrophysics student you will acquire a firm foundation of Astrophysics in Year 1, developing a theoretical understanding and mathematical skills. In your final year you will undertake individual project which provides an introduction to research over a whole semester. This is an excellent opportunity for students and you may be able to study abroad within a collaborating research group, such as in Florence, Italy, South Africa or with NASA.
Mathematics
Available courses:
The MMATH (Hons) and BSc (Hons) Mathematics degree courses equips students with a thorough overview of modern mathematics covering a range of topics from pure and applied mathematics and statistics.
Our Mathematics course is designed to provide you with an excellent foundation in modern mathematics and to develop your skills and knowledge over a broad area of the mathematical disciplines. Maths is the most fundamental of all subjects and underpins science and technology with applications in a wide variety of disciplines.
