The Centre for Astrophysics is delighted to welcome four new research students starting 2008 October. They come from a variety of backgrounds and institutions, studying towards doctorates or masters by research.
Caroline Alexander is continuing her research in solar physics, following a successful time at University College London completing a Space Science MSc. Prior to that Caroline gained a BSc(Hons) degree in Astrophysics from the University of Edinburgh.
Gareth Few comes to us from the University of Nottingham, where he completed an MSci in Theoretical Astrophysics. Under the supervision of Prof Brad Gibson, he will be looking at the chemodynamics of galaxy discs. Gareth was one of the delegates at the 2007 Undergraduate Research School, which will happen again in 2008 December.
Coming to us via a rather different route, Srinivasan Raghunathan is enroled for an MSc by research, working with Dr Roger Clowes. Previously he worked as a software engineer for Electronic Data Systems, and moved to Preston from Chennai, India.
Having returend to study via an Open University GCSE-level refresher course, Lee Stewart has recently gained first class honours on UCLan’s BSc(Hons) Mathematics programme. Dr Tim Cawthorne is supervising his MSc by research, and he will be looking at modelling the structures of magnetic fields in extragalactic jets. Lee is a recipient of a UCLan Gilbertson Scholarship, without which he could not be studying with us.
