JHI PhD student Alexia Lopez featured in the BBC

JHI PhD student Alexia Lopez featured in the BBC Four documentary “Secrets of Size: Atoms to Supergalaxies“, episode 2 “Going Big“, presented by Prof. Jim Al-Khalili.

Alexia discussed her discovery of A Giant Arc on the Sky with Jim. The Giant Arc appears as an enormous, nearly symmetrical, crescent of galaxies in the remote universe. It is approximately 3.3 billion light-years across (1/15th the radius of the observable universe), at a distance from us of about 9.2 billion light-years. The Giant Arc adds to an accumulating set of (cautious) challenges to the Cosmological Principle, which is the foundation of our theoretical understanding of cosmology and the universe.
